The discussion about a women's right to be topless and some of the answers there bought this question to my mind. As a country we have a lot of religious undertone. some more advert then others. Now looking at the 1800s things we consider wrong and taboo now were not then and vis versa. Looking at modern times looking at Europe it seems that a lot of things there that are no big deal like being topless or drinking at a younger age etc... are no big deal to them but are a huge deal to us.

now this isn't a hit on religion and it maybe something else that causes these sentiments in our country compared to over there. What do you think makes us in some way more wrapped around the axle about these things?

Although, blame is placed on the Puritans, it really falls on men and the issues that they have with women; so it is more about control and religion is the tool. Also it got worse after the mid 1980's when the moralist got into politics.

Our country's beginning are deeply rooted with religious ideologies. It is one of the things that have helped build the solid foundation this country was built on. Religion is part of the reason that folks get as you say “wrapped around the axle” about a lot of things. But on the flip side, lack of traditional values is part of the problem with this country as well. Depending on the issue depends on who runs out of the wood work to jump on a band wagon. I have my high horse that I ride occasionally, because I feel passionate about the topic. Also, here in the United States it does depend on what area of the country you are in. We are huge and opinions change by region, based on who is the dominate group of that area.

Yes! I'm currently in Europe and I feel I'm going to have a hard time fitting back in in the US. Even my kids! My daughter was running around naked at the beach in Croatia. No one batted an eye. Ughh America is so prude.
