Who has been Stationed at Fort Irwin, CA and what can those ROP Members Tell us about the Housing, Family Activities, and the Duty Station?

RP Members that have been stationed there we need as much feedback as possible from firsthand experiences.

I have an RP connection that would really like to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly! Please direct your responses to SPC (Join to see)

I have been stationed here 28 months. They have a commissary, a small town center with a clothing and sales, alterations, Pizza Hut, Subway, etc. They also have a Sam Adams restaurant on post by the bank. They have 3 main housing areas: Crackerjack Flats, Sandy basin, and Sleepy Hollow for E-7 and above. There are a couple of gyms (X1 Crossfit gym), post theater, hospital, and chapels. This is a very remote post with the main training mission being training rotational training units. We are around 40-45 minutes from I-15. We are approximately 2.5 hours from Las Vegas and 3.0 hours from San Diego. I hope this helps.

It's another typical Army base with sand imported for everyone's enjoyment. Oh, and it gets a little warm sometimes.

It doesn't get *that* warm -- Barstow never got more than a degree or two warmer than Baghdad during my first tour in Iraq.

To be honest this was by far my most enjoyable duty station. Mainly cause of the job I had. The housing has improved drastically. We enjoyed the house we were given. The schools for the younger children are pretty good. The amenities on base aren't robust but not sparse. The downside is you have to plan a whole day trip to go anywhere off post. I recommend living on post due to that. Californians love to commute. I don't.
