Yes SPC Margaret Higgins , I am thankful for my promotion to LTC. I had been passed over twice based on a bad report as a young CPT from a Brigadier General (BG). I had prayed that the Lord would allow me to be promoted to LTC. One of my previous raters suggested I contact a few flag officers and ask for their endorsements. I contacted three BGs and they each provided endorsements. I was promoted in April 2000 which was 2 months before I would have been forced to leave the military. I volunteered after 9/11/2001 and was mobilized soon afterwards. I ended up serving under one of the BGs who had since been promoted to LTG. I was able to serve for 8 more years after that final promotion and contribute in many ways to various war efforts. SPC (Join to see), SGT Forrest Stewart, CH (MAJ) William Beaver, SSG James J. I made the E-7 list in my 10th year. i had to get out on a medical. My number came up right after I got out...just into my 11th year. At that time, very good for a female. I had orders for ANOC that were reminded because of my pending medical discharge. As an E-5 I had unofficially filled in for an E-8 for an extended period of time. As a SSG I had done the work and duties of a SGM for 6 months until a new one came and continued to guide the new one in his duties,for various reasons, in addition to my own work. Yes I was proud of my rank and my accomplishments in the Army. I learned that I was capable of much more than I was trained to do because of previous leadership. The leadership in my office when I left was very toxic and I was glad to leave there, but not the Army nor the Command.

I got bad EERs when I did my best work. Personalities are a bummer. When one feels intimidated by one who is lower on the pay grade and can do the work of the superior, instead of feeling there is a great subordinate, the old soldier feels threatened. I was older when I went into the Armer and was in the habit of knowing my bosses job...as a civilian and then as a soldier. In my career field, one knew a variety of jobs. I was the oldest child and leadership was inborn. Sometimes ones nature can be a hardship in the military when pared with the wrong people.

That is both sad and reprehensible if you got bad EERs when you were doing your best work SSG(P) D. Wright Downs. It is interesting that age discrimination has been a factor of federal law for some time. I doubt that the originators seriously considered situations like the one you faced which is fairly common of older people working for younger people all of who are under 50 years age.

Very proud. I enlisted as a PV1 and rose to SSG , went to OCS and was promoted up through the ranks to LTC.

This rank is a pit stop to my rank that I intend to earn before I finally leave the military. However it is giving me the opportunity to do things that I would not be able to do at lower ranks. I am proud to be a Staff Sergeant though, ready for the next level.

I really like your answer; SFC (Join to see). You should be VERY PROUD of yourself; for being a Staff Sergeant. And, I am glad that you are using your rank to its best advantage. GOOD FOR YOU. I am VERY proud of you for that.
