Recently I have read and watched a number of articles about the shootings in Chattanooga. As tragic as these events are, I am rather disturbed to see that most of the attention is placed on the shooting suspect rather than the victims. Does the media do an injustice to military members who have lost their lives to terrorism on American Soil?
I offer as an example a search I conducted yesterday for “marine shooting.”

The results were not what I expected as the top 4 results contained 3 articles about the shooter rather than the victims.

Is this a cultural issue or the population wanting to be informed about tragedy and turmoil?

Is this the media stepping over the line looking for stories that provide “shock and awe” to give the public?

Should we be hearing more about the Marine’s that we lost, rather than turning on the TV and seeing the face the of the man accused of taking their lives over and over?

I watched a "news" station that showed that public reaction to the shooting. One of the interviewees stated that she had no remorse for the military members that died, because that is what we are paid for, and supposed to do, die.

All news is sensationalized just to get viewers.

As we say time and time again, blood and bullets sell news. The media wants to make this guy look like the monster he truly is/was. Personally, I rather see the media focus their energy on the shooter rather than be on the door steps of the families that were impacted on that day. They need their time and space to properly deal with and process their thoughts around what happened and figure out the best course to continue on without their loved ones.

SGT Ben Keen, Your reply reminded me of something. Back in 2000, I was selected to be in a documentary about Huey helicopters. I called a local station to see if they would be interested in covering my part of the documentary. I was to be reunited with a fellow I helped rescue one night in Nam. I talked to the main news person, who was in the Marines in Vietnam, and had been wounded. I just knew he would do it. He told me no. He said unless it involves murder, something really horrible, like several people dying in an accident, they wouldn't be interested in a story like that.
Sensationalism is all they care about.

SGT (Join to see) - I think that is why it is so important for Veterans to continue to try and get their story out there. Yes, the people want to hear about body counts and all that crap but there are other stories that deserve to be told. Where and when one person says no, another may be willing to listen you just need to keep talking.

SGT Ben Keen, I didn't contact anyone else, but two TV news anchors did show up. It was a glorious day.

I actually think the media is on point here. Our real interest is in the shooter.

A bunch of people have all jumped on the bandwagon that this kid was an Islamic extremist because he has a funny-sounding name. But, he was from Kuwait. We liberated that country in 1991 and it's a place where we're still welcomed with open arms.

SGT (Join to see), Even kids born here in America have gone over to ISIS. I don't know if it sounds exciting to them or whether they really are against the U.S.
When they first showed his picture, I was surprised he was a nice looking kid. Terrorists come in all different features. I'm finally beginning to realize that.
