We all have an opinion of our time in service that one way or another, have tried to communicate to our children about what it's like to work for Uncle Sam. What have you said or done to motivate your children into joining up? Or did you encourage them not to join, or perhaps avoided the topic all together?

My daughter is a nurse with a BSN. I have tried and tried to get her to join but she ust doesn't want anything to do with it. Ieven tried to get her to go into the reserves but she greq up in it and loves it but just doesn't want to do it herself. But I can't complain, she is successful and doing well and has been accepted to Nurse Practioner school so she has that going for her.

Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth Congrats to your daughter. In many cases having a Nurse Practitioner is better than the doctor!

Sorry to hear you have had no luck with the daughter joining up. The training, experiences, and now retirement pay as an RN at age 48 is incredible. I now set the stage when and where I work and Army nursing was one of the best choices I have made in life.

MAJ Byron Oyler - I agree...but she just said it wasn't for her. We even have a C-17 medevac guard unit in our state...but she just doens't want it. She is happy in her life now working on her NP so when she finishes that she will be set...of course she is set now as nurses are in demand but that will do her good to. I sure was hoping she would carry the legacy forward but oh well...I am proud of her for being mature enough to not kneejerk and do what dad wants her to do and to live her own life.

I have daughters, but I have mentioned the education benefits and general life experiences that could be gained by joining the service. I've encouraged friends kids to consider the service as well.
It was a time in my life that I'll always remember, and while I didn't use the GI Bill, I have friends that have and done very well in life.
