Why would this Veteran present a fraudulent document to justify unearned medals? Why dig a deeper hole?

John James “J.J.” Lavoie could’ve simply taken off his fraudulent and unearned military medals and walked away.
But he didn’t.
In fact, he didn’t even have to take the medals off. Under the Stolen Valor Act of 2013, it isn’t a crime to simply wear unearned medals.
However, after Lavoie was featured in a Florida Times-Union June investigation, “Stolen Valor,” he approached the American Legion and at least one local news agency with a military discharge document he says proves he earned the awards.
A Times-Union investigation involving font experts and supervisors at the National Archives has determined that document to be fraudulent.
This is a photo, taken by Ken Amaro, of the DD 215 J.J. Lavoie showed him that he said proved he earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, and three Purple Hearts. The document is fraudulent, according to a Times-Union investigation involving font specialists and supervisors at the National Archives.Problems: The font used for the dates 930228 and 93022, as well as lines 12b, 12c, 12f and 13 - which lists all the medals - is Calibri, which wasn't invented until 2004. The date box at the bottom left clearly shows the document was supposedly created on Feb. 25, 1993 - or in military terms, 930225.In addition tape marks can be seen clearly above each of the dates and lines listed above. There is also pencil shading around all the same areas, likely an attempt to either cover up what was on the form originally, or to recreate the shading which can be found on an original copy of this form - but is lacking here.

I'll never understand people like this. Why can't they accept their service, why do they have to make up lies? It has never even occurred to me to lie about my own service.
A person who never deployed or left the continental United States but got an Honorable Discharge served just as much as a person who won the Medal Of Honor!

My daughter has mastered the art of finding something to step on to get at something out of her reach!

I remember I did the same thing, no matter what I had to climb on to get to what I wanted to see. I stayed in more trouble from doing that, than anything else. Then after we had my daughter and three sons, pay back was double, many times.

I forgot to close the bathroom door last night. I heard my daughter messing around in there so I went to investigate. She had pulled over her little step stool that we use for when she washes her hands & face, climbed up onto the counter, into the sink, and had the medicine cabinet open and going through it.
She saw me and reached her arms out and leaned towards me to help her down as if to say "Daddy! I was just minding my own business and suddenly I found myself up here where I shouldn't be!"

She sounds like a real hoot PO1 John Miller. Cherish all your getting right now. As they grow older, you become the enemy until they reach college age. Then your back to "Daddy". I miss my small kids. We did everything together. But, now it's the grandkids turn.

Keith, It's a shame that people do this, and when you point them out, they get mad because you do. There was another articale after this one about not having to steal them, just order them on line. It's sad, but when I go to gun shows and things of that nature, I always see the medals guys out there trying to sell them. But in light of the fact of the fire at the National Archieves back in 1973, there are a lot of veterans, thatunless they kept their own copies, the rocords are gone forever.

And there's nothing to keep them from doing it. I wish the would defect to Canada. No, wait. They can't do that anymore. I'll bet their friends and family are real proud of them.

Reference you’re mentioning national archives fire
Do yourself a favor and do some research indirect the factual position is of HRC in the national archive for how few documents were truly lost
Welfare from zero it’s not what most people think or are led to believe
I was ignorant of the truth myself until I was forced to dig into it researching someone making the claim I was amazed that what I knew was grossly blown out of proportion compared to the reality

This clown couldn't be happy with just having done his job? I wear what I earned and tell very few stories, true or embellished. I was for the most part an average SFC.....

I know, I've got some of them in my American legion post who have done everything and been everywhere, if you listen to their stories. I do have to admit though the biggest talker talks about being airborne but doesn't wear the wings.....I should ask for his 214 some day...But another Commander sometime in the past saw it....

SFC Everett Oliver, Hey Sarge, ask him where he earned his cherry wings. Maybe he won't know what cherry wings are. They're the wings you earn after jump school. Ask him how long was he in jump school. When I went through, it took three weeks.ask him what a stick is. A stick is the same as a formed up column. Ask him what kind of jump boots he has.

LOL I know all the lingo because I was a leg in an airborne Unit. But do I really want to ruin his story telling?
