The 100,000 Jobs Mission, as it is stated on the mission's website, began in 2011 as a coalition of eleven companies. These companies were "committed to hire 100,000 veterans by 2020". Have you ever heard of it before? Do you think the companies mean what they are saying and doing or do you think it is for show? Do any of you work in one of these companies and have good or bad experiences with them?
We put together an article for you of the 10 companies in the coalition that we think are doing some great things!

I think its just a show, and they probably do hire some veterans, mostly mid level to senior officers, but I never heard of any enlisted people getting a job with one of these companies. I applied with many of these companies but never heard a single peep from them after submitting an application. In my opinion I think they are doing a feel good campaign saying "look at how we are taking care of veterans, are we not great". And I do understand that there is not a job for everyone, but common courtesy would be to send a quick e-mail or letter saying sorry your not what we are looking for currently.

PO1 Glenn Boucher, that is bad that you applied for jobs within more than one of these companies and never heard anything from them. This is something that we are hearing more and more of and it is a bad precedent for these companies to be setting. It would be interesting to see the roles that these companies do hire veterans in, I wonder if it is mid level - to - senior roles only.

Elizabeth Malkin, I've heard of it and I've even applied for a job with Amazon before under their veteran's program. However I never heard anything back, not even a "thank you for applying but we decided to go with someone else" type response. All I ever got was an automated response saying "we are reviewing your qualifications."

PO1 John Miller, it sounds like maybe you are too qualified for the positions that you are looking at. Companies don't want to hire someone that they are worried will outgrow the position very quickly and so they will have invested time and training into them and then the person leaves. You are right that normally there is a slight dip in in which rung a person enters the ladder on moving from the military to civilian worlds but perhaps you are looking at roles that aren't representing how well qualified you are. Do you have civilian certifications for the experience that you have? The certification process is an expensive, time consuming and frustrating one but often private sector companies are looking for things that they know/need to have checked off (especially defense contractors) so that might be something that they are looking for as well.

Hello Elizabeth
The problem I have run into with job applications is that my field is all about certification and not degree. After I graduated, I learned that I could have gotten a job without the degree if I was certified. It is frustrating to say the least.
Right after the president of Starbucks made a big announcement about hiring veterans I applied for an IT job. Heard back from them almost a year later with the usual platitudes about being highly qualified and thanks for your service but no interview. I think the announcement was pure window dressing. If I wanted to be a barista or store manager I think I would have had a shot at the job.

Personally I think our government will have a much better social aim in creating 100,000 more veteran owned businesses. These businesses will be social enterprises targeting an end to the veteran unemployment rate and bridging the civilian and military communities to come together as one. I think we can afford drawing those funds from the $32 Trillion we spend on anti poverty programs. I'll even volunteer to build business models for free to all those Military-Affiliated Personnel who are interested.

Sorry for the delay. Yes I do have civilian certifications and a DOD Security Clearance. Those are partially the reasons I am most comfortable working for defense contractors.
Luckily my current job utilizes those aspects and pays pretty well too.
I am always looking for better opportunities though. I am actually considering leaving this position for another one that I'm not sure pays the same, less, or more, but is more in line with what I want to do.
I'm currently a systems administrator but I want to get back into working in Information Assurance.
