If a soldier is wounded during a training exercise(FTX, gun range, etc), can the wounded soldier be awarded anything?

I'm asking this question because I understand that soldier's can get awarded a purple heart if injured in combat against hostile forces. Would that be possible if it was in a training environment?

If a soldier is wounded/injured in training here's what should happen:
_Conduct a preliminary investigation to determine if the injury was caused by simple negligence, gross negligence or misconduct. The investigation should focus on whoever was the Safety Officer/Safety SNCO.
_If appropriate, the "award" should be administrative or punitive action against the Safety Officer/Safety SNCO or the person injured.
To answer your question directly, no. I'm sorry but this is the result of "participation trophy" mentality and the Army's culture of hanging more ribbons, trinkets, doo-dads, and gee-gaws on a uniform than the Girls scouts attending the Kentucky Derby.

CPO Matthew Bigelow - Whoever told your son that his injury was just one of those things, that no one was responsible, and dismissed it with disability payments; has most likely done your son a great disservice.
It wasn't just one of those things. If someone was negligent they need to be held accountable, and the science of range safety is not empty prattle. It is exercising due diligence to make sure no other soldier suffers your son's fate. By no means am I blowing off your son's injury. I am blowing off the belief that it could not have been prevented.

I had some really bad landings, and my back is really jacked up from those days, years ago. I am on the permanent and total dis list. BUT : I would be ashamed to wear a purple heart for such escapades. It is the nature of the training. It is in NO Way a comparison to what a Purple Heart (to me) represents. I am 110% agreement that it is the participation trophy thing.
