How common is it having to interview for a unit vacancy in the Reserves?

Has anyone ever had to interview to join a unit? I decided to find a new home in the reserves. I reached out to a unit that I saw had a vacancy and a career counselor got some of my info and said she needed to reach out to the commander since an interview was required to join the unit. The unit seems to have a interesting mission, and I am fine with it, but I was curious if this was common?

Its common for command positions, specialty MOS/units, and has been used for most officers in general. A policy came down a few years ago (in the USAR) that Soldiers no longer had to interview for positions (outside of command) if they met the qualifications of the para and line number for the position. Tranfers have become easier, but it is still best practice to reach out to the command team that you are wanting to transfer to.

Its only for units with special needs or mos requirements that require vetting prior to soldiers being allowed to join. One example is flight medic, these units have a specialized mission and skillset requirement and are unwilling to send soldiers to 68w mos reclass and the flight medic pipeline. Most seek soldiers who already hold 68w and have their nremt-p as this significantly cuts down the time at training.
