I am an 11b in a guard unit and also a cadet. I joined the guard as an 11b bc I saw how bad my ROTC training was and didn't want to be terrible as an officer (Ik that IBOLC helps). However, as naive as it sounds, I want to see combat. Seeing that we're in peacetime and not like officers see much combat, it looks like I might never have that chance being an infantry officer. I wanted to go Option 40 outta high school but my mom panicked so I did ROTC to please her. I know RASP/SF isn't easy, but I feel confident in myself and am always going to bet on myself. I wanted to be an officer so I can be a leader in our Army. I know leaders are enlisted as well, but I always envisioned being an officer. I want to see combat and serve like those before me. I sound pretty green, but do any of you guys have any advice? I'd really appreciate it.

Do an intense self-assessment before you make any decision. While you want to see combat and go special operations, think about your current status and eligibility to attend either course. Before you quit college or attempt to go Ranger / Special Forces, answer the following questions below....

Are you in top physical shape?
Are you proficient in land navigation?
Can you perform under intense stress with minimal food and sleep?
What is your GT score?

Not to insult, but make sure that you can meet the standards because commissioned officer is high and special operations is even higher

My advice...slow your role and breathe. The fact you WANT to see combat makes me nervous. Nervous for you AND your future Soldiers.

Really? I've rarely met an Infantryman, whether they've been in combat hundreds of times or not yet, who didn't want to go into combat.

SPC Elijah J. Henry, MBA - There is a difference between training for combat....prepping for combat....but the fact that he WANTS combat...that is what makes me nervous. I've been to two different combat areas. Each time I didn't WANT to go. It's all fun and games until real bullets and bombs start dropping.

MSG (Join to see) - understood. Nonetheless, what I said stands. Men don't seem to join the Infantry during war not actually hoping to fight. The only time I heard an Infantryman say otherwise was a man who went 18X expressly to get the Enlisted Long Tab purely for the prestige then commission to who-knows-what branch. He was the kind of guy who as a SPC fresh out of OSUT made PVTs stand at parade rest for him during Airborne School. His name was Samaniego, and his wife was a brand new 2LT.

Get a 11B Tactical SOP and study it until it becomes natural.
