CPT (Join to see) That's what I was thinking. I doubt they really want to be reminded of why they got it.

On the surface, a PH is a solemn thing. Some circumstances that resulted in the award are the result of great sacrifice. Others, not so much. In then end, someone, somewhere felt their injuries were the result of enemy action.
Then again, I don't go checking out racks and commenting on Silver stars or awards with "V" devices. To me, the PH is no different. It is the Army's recognition of their sacrifice, service, or achievement.
On the civilian side, in my experience, not too many veterans in the "great sacrifice" category, wear their PH on their sleeve.
I would thank any veteran for their service and if it came up in conversation, ask them about their experiences. At the end of the day, that matters more than the colored ribbons or fancy badges.
