SFC Kelly Fuerhoff apologies SFC Fuerhoff. When I say recommended its mainly to say not required but shows the step by step process of the rank structure and development of a Junior NCO. There is nothing by the books stating this.

SPC Dasan Toney you literally only have to type "E5 Step NCOES Req" into Google and the answer will come up from other people asking the same question - literally word for word.

SFC (Join to see) indeed you can SFC Boyd. Most days NCOs to get certain ADPs, ADRPs, and all regulations down have done this through out the years. I am not stating you are wrong here as it's the easiest path of approach, I am however saying that we as Service Members on an interconnected SM platform for relaying information if they came here it was to get an answer from an experienced SM, or NCO.

SPC Dasan Toney as leaders out job is to teach you to hunt not to hunt for you. If asking your leader becomes the easy button, then when you're a leader your response to a new situation will be to ask others rather than find the answer yourself. This creates what's known as Tribal Knowledge. Tribal Knowledge is usually wrong, out of date, or doesn't apply to your situation. 90% of my job is fixing things that get screwed up because someone's NCO told them to do something they thought was right because someone they knew told them this is the way it should be at some point or other...instead of going to the source and finding the answer. This is why BLC is basically a course on how to research regulations

In simplest of explanations, you need to complete your required NCOES school before you can get promoted.

SPC (Join to see) - Per the STEP guidelines:

SELECT: Promotion Board
TRAIN: Trained by Leaders to take on the new and upcoming rank and roll (this goes in tandem with EDUCATE...the DLC portions)
EDUCATE: Attend and pass all required NCOES steps (BLC, ALC Phases, SLC phases, etc)
PROMOTE: Self explanatory
