“While it may be appropriate for the National Guard or other service branches to spend taxpayer funds on activities directly related to recruiting, giving taxpayer funds to professional sports teams for activities that are portrayed to the public as paying homage to U.S. military personnel would seem inappropriate,” Flake said.

If this is true, I agree with the senator.

The Military should not be paying for events that appear to be honoring the troops. The events bring a certain amount of goodwill and recognition to the teams and the teams should bear the costs.

Advertising such as supporting a NASCAR team is different, but events before or during football games are generally not seen as advertising by the general population.

Keep the money with the troops, they after all are the ones who may have to pay the ultimate price. If you want trrops at a sporting avent show up at the local high school as color guard, they after all are the audience you need.
