Based on your personal experience, does unit PT or individual PT help you better to reach your fitness goals? Or is a combination of both? Or do you PT at all anymore?

Unit PT is "maintenance."

Individual PT is "Progress."

You will not get better at PT with your unit. You do that alone, or in VERY small groups (1-4 people). When the size of the "team" gets too large, the "weakest" (lack of better term) will hold back the rest. You can't get better. However, you can maintain Fitness in large groups fairly easily, because "Endurance" is based on time & effort, as opposed to "stress" (needing to improve).

As an example.

A platoon of 42~ (Lt, PSG, 3x Squads of 13, Doc) go out for a run. You run as fast as the 2nd slowest man. If your fastest man is doing an 18:00 3mile, and your slowest is at 23:00, the fast guy isn't even breaking a sweat at this slow guys pace. If you go at slow guys pace, he's not really getting a workout either. Slow go just a "hair" faster, to get into maintenance mode. Go longer.

But if you want to improve Slow guy, you need him to train with a couple other guys. It can't be with the entire Platoon. Just won't work. You can't dedicate the attention he needs, and "develop him properly."

Same applies to any physical exercise. Anything really.

Unit PT is good for maintaining APFT standards, and camaraderie. However, individual PT allows me to focus on my weak areas.

I was in the best shape of my life when assigned with a previous unit........we had a formation in the morning (for accountability purposes), but it was an individual preference and many of us focused on crossfit oriented training....
