I am trying to find out some information on moving my family to my HAAP assignment prior to my arrival. I am PCS'ing to Soto Cano AB in January 2015. I have a return assignment to Savannah, GA. Can I move my family to Savannah, GA prior to my arrival?

Yes SFC Turpin. You need to get a hold of your MPD and show them your orders stating the HARP then ask for a early move of family members.

1SG,

Thank you for your reply and help with this matter. As soon as I recieve my orders I will contact my MPD and let them know of my family's intent to move early. They will actually be moving 6 months  prior to my arrival so that my wife can secure employment and enroll my children into school. I was told that I needed to contact my gaining unit to let them know that they will be there early. Is this this case? This will be a first for me I have always been there when we have PCS'd.

SFC Turpin, thanks for asking this question. I can't cite a specific reg, etc. -- but I believe that during my deployment, a few NCOs in my unit had their families already moving to their next duty station, since they were going to be moving anyway after the 90-day stabilization when we came home.  I'll ask a few SNCOs I know here on RallyPoint to see if they can come to this thread and help you out!  Feel free to email me personally at [login to see] if your question isn't resolved in the coming days, and I'll see if I can make something happen.  Good luck!

SIR,

Thank you for your reply. I tried to find anything that talked about early move in the regs but couldnt find anything. My family will be actually trying to move to savannah about 6 months prior to my arrival I just want to make sure that they can move early and that they are taken care off. Thank You!

SFC T.,

I don't know if they still authorize it or not, but I did it twice in my career once for an Italy short tour in the 80s, and once on a Korea tour in 99/00, my family was allowed to relocate at government expense for my HAAP.

I know with all the financial restraints and cutbacks, it may be something they have changed or reduced on, but I would suggest contacting your local transportation office to check on the current allowable or regulations covering it.

Good luck and enjoy the assignment.
