I'm a Split Training Op currently doing my senior year in high school. Somebody reached out to me and offered a position to do Honor Guard in the AL ARNG. Should I take up the offer? Is it difficult? How good does it look on the ERB of somebody who hasn't been to AIT yet?

If you have the chance to do it, do it. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. If you have the opportunity to make a family’s day by being there for them. Be there. Plus you get paid. You should be honored to be able to participate.

Thank you sir. I just get worried. Being in such an important position. I'm good at DNC but it only takes one mistake.

PFC (Join to see) That’s why the teams practice. They won’t remember if you make a mistake. What they’ll remember is the men and women that did the ceremony for their lost loved one. You can’t do it on the weekdays during school but if have free weekends. Volunteer.

PFC (Join to see) - I have done Honor Guard with my VFW. We made mistakes. The families didn't care. What they cared about was that we were there to pay respects to the deceased and to the families. That we showed up and provided that last measure of honor and respect the families and deceased should receive.

Do it. It's an experience AC troops generally don't get these days. As a new 2LT, I was assigned to my unit's team at Fort Sill. We trained daily, but still occasionally made mistakes. I had one kid on the team who began having seizures under stress. On our first "live" funeral, he went out....eyes rolled back in his head, lights on but nobody home. But we had trained so much that he operated on muscle memory and did his part in spite of being in the Twilight Zone. He snapped out of it as we were marching out of the cemetery. Fun times.

Soldier, I highly recommend you take this offer. It is only as difficult as you make it. That is probably the only CON I can think of. The PROs are that your uniform will never look as good since you will want to/need to look your best. You will make POCs that can probably assist you down the line. And.....you will be a part of a team that makes an ever lasting impression on others. It may not make it onto your ERB....but it will be noticed by those that pay attention.

You might make some good contacts if you want to go AGR.

I'm comfortable in the guard. I plan on volunteering for some deployments on TOD. After I get out of the guard I may do active for another 4 years. I don’t know yet.
