What is it like being a 15N? How often do they use their skills to transition to a civilian job?

I have a family member who is very mechanically inclined (loves taking apart and building cars), very bright, but not a strong student. Is this a good stepping stone to a civilian job? I'm curious what everyone's professional experiences have been both in and out of the military.

While I wasn't a 15N personally, I can tell you I know a few people that went in that MOS and came out getting some great jobs on the civilian side with the major airline carriers. It's my understanding that those that come with that MOS are sought after especially those that are very bright and good at what they do.
