My only thought is that they had Jihadist leanings before joining, joined the military to learn military skills, then sought a Jihadist organization.

Or perhaps reverse Stockholm Syndrome in a soldier who did a DetOps mission?

Reverse Stockholm Syndrome, interesting. There is a certain correctional facility near me that has had its female officers struggle with that.

I'm sure there's a better term for it.

I did a Det Ops mission in Iraq. When I started to hear rumors that some of our troops might be feeling sorry for some of the detainees, we started listing select individuals' crimes at guard mount. That cured the beginnings of sympathy.

Treat detainees/prisoners humanely and IAW the law, but never sympathize. That's a slippery slope.
