Given the dates involved, I'd seriously look into it...It's possible his grandfather was among some of the pioneers of naval aviation; perhaps even a squadron mate of some of the famous "Millionaires' Squadron" from late WWI. A good place to contact would be the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida...they have quite a bit of info on early naval aviation.

Might check out the Navy museum next to Dahlgren (VA). They might have suggestions.
