What are the best tools or procedures that you have seen used for a unit supply cage and arms room?

It could be digital tools (spreadsheets), some sort of signage, check out sheets, inventory lists for each locker... looking for any ideas you may have.

Having all the admin numbers of weapons aligned with serial numbers on the sensitive items inventory so that the weapons are in that order n the racks. it aids quick accountability without sacrificing flesh to metal verification. Which usually means re-numbering weapons. NVGs should be the same way. If you don't train with or issue bayonets, put them in a command inventoried crate and have it sealed with serial numbered bands. Have the commander wrote an MFR specifying that the crate is to be inventoried by its container paperwork (same form you use for a shipping container).
There needs to be an offline tracker for Supply transactions and adjustments and their status of adoption in GCCS-A, especially if Division PBO has yet to do it. It allows for respectful and timely follow up to ensure that inventories are accurate and up to date. Schedule a Supply Catalog verification each quarter where you validate the correct SC is on hand. If it changes, an analysis of the SKO, BII, or AVM changes so that requisitions or relief can be officially done to remedy the delta.
Each Supply location in the Supply room needs to be numbered and recorded as a manual planograph so that you can find things quickly and support inventories.
Go find your neighborhood 74D and make sure this potentially junior soldier has Supply accountability of their stuff. Telling them to "fix it" may not be viable. Validate things that are out for maintenance or calibration.
Pry into the schedule of weapons gauging and cyclic services so there are no eleventh hour crisises that you have to sort out whilst having the plaque blown out of your arteries. After each FTX and range, a capture of round counts for the firing Data cards (think these are DD318s) so your maintenance people can assess when weapons are "shot out" and need barrels or upper recievers.
Having desk procedures to cover multi step processes and cross checks of each major function in the Supply room, NBC room, and Arms Room. All the cyclic reports that are due. How you draw Field rations for training, how you draw/turn in ammunition, etc.

I utilize a spreadsheet that lists the distance from the unit. It is produced by CSMM but then I correct the mileage to the DTS mileage.
Is perfect for LIK, IST, ect.

CLP was a change from LSA. Squirt bottles. First used at Quantico in 79/80. I enjoyed the delays checking out weapons, but was never inside the cage. I'd guess they starting marking with tape and went from there. Scanners are a good measure, but the KISS rule should apply. New tech often means less tooth, more tail.
