People spend $10 billion every year to learn what you need to do to become more successful. Interestingly, according to network science success isn't based on traditional attributes.

I would go with the more traditional predictors of success mentioned in the article, LTC David S. Chang, ChFC®, CLU®, especially if we're talking about the military: goal-oriented, resilient, persistent. Those attributes describe a successful person in my mind.
The open network vs. closed network may be a good argument for the civilian world, but I don't see it in the military. I guess, by definition in the military, we are sort of in a closed network. However, we have to move to a new unit every few years, and that requires us to open up our network and fit into the new environment. So I see it as something of a hybrid environment when it comes to open vs. closed networks in the military.
And I'll add adaptable to my list above, because when we PCS to a new assignment, we must be able to adapt ourselves and our way of doing business (soldiering) to succeed.
