Should I start working on a 51C reclass packet before applying for AGR or should I wait until I get into the Reserve component?

Can someone answer my questions. I am currently Active Army in Hawaii thinking about going to apply for AGR as soon as my window open. I am also thinking about changing my MOS to 51C. Should I start working on reclass packet first or should I wait until I get into reserve component. The main reason I am trying to go to AGR is I would like to stay in Hawaii. Is it even possible to station in Hawaii after AIT IF I decide to stay in active duty?

You're going to want to have some backup plans. There's no guarantee you'll get accepted for 51C and there's no guarantee you'll get offered a slot on AGR, and even if you do, it might not be a spot for Hawaii. If you go to 51C school then you owe the Army 5 years upon graduation and you don't pick your next duty station.

It depends how bad you want to be a 51C, if you want AGR you will have to be open to the availability of the MOS. You can apply to an AGR job without being MOS qualidied because if hired the unit will send you to the school. The only benefit in having the MOS prior to an interview for and AGR job is that you will be able to answer questions from the board.
