I served in the CGA for about four years, and qualified as Boat Crew, Coxswain, PWC Operator and Comms. We did quite a bit of port-patrol in the Port of Tampa after 9-11, and some SAR. It was a great experience, because I got to work with some top-notch mariners, one of whom was also a licensed Commercial Boat Captain. I enjoyed OP's, but there are a lot of other things a person can do in the CGA.
I was also in a VFD during that time, and I got out of CGA so that I could concentrate my efforts in my Fire Department, at the recommendation of a fellow CGA member who was also a Battalion Chief of another Fire Department and a highly-respected professional.
There are also a lot of service options and opportunities in the Civil Air Patrol. I was Asst. Dir. of Comms for the New Mexico Wing for about eight years back in the 80's and early 90's, as well as an ELT location specialist. I was a member of a Composite Squadron, but I was attached to Wing.
Holler if you have any other questions Capt Daniel Goodman.

I've been out a while now but I remember an Auxiliarist working in our base medical clinic. I believe that there are also other non-seagoing places to serve. I hope that there is something available that is meaningful to you.
