(Some may have preferred Vietnam to Fort Polk in the 70s, but that's another story.) We'd been told throughout AIT that our next stop was Europe. Then, in the last two weeks of training, that suddenly changed to Vietnam. I arrived Aug 1 and was eventually sent to the 23rd Infantry Division at Chu Lai. After orientation there, I went on to Danang and the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. Incidentally, that brigade became the last combat unit in Vietnam. Our unit had only one KIA while I was there. He was a corporal of all things, who had served one or two previous tours. Apparently he preferred service in Vietnam to service in Europe. Sadly, volunteering for Vietnam had an unfortunate ending for him. Two months after he died, I got a 100 day drop and came home. Now, when I visit my brother, retired Air Force, in Abilene, I visit his grave in the city cemetery and leave a quarter. I'll keep doing that as long as I can make the trip south for the winter.
