Start working on passports for family as soon as possible. Also, be sure to get tourists passports in addition to official passports.

May help to study for the USAEUR drivers license, you have to have it before you can pick up your vehicle. Don't sweat a place to stay if you are bringing family, they will take care of that.

Start studying German now. The batter you are able to understand conversational German, the more opportunity you will have to enjoy traveling (in you off time) to see Germany and the rest of Europe.
Have you been stationed OCONUS before (not deployed) and are you taking a family with you?
Knowing this will allow for more detailed advice.

I used to be with 5-7 ADA I been 13 yrs in the ARMY and is the best assignment so far. Baumholder is really small there is almost anything to do but you will be really close to other countries it's all about the travel. Take advantage of it.
