I had seen the chest pockets removed from the ACU top once before and wondered if that went against regulations. If anyone has insight I’d like to know.

Absolutely unauthorized.
AR 670-1
No item governed by this regulation will be altered in any way that changes the basic design, or the intended concept of fit, as described in Technical Manual (TM) 10–227 and Army Regulation (AR) 700–84, including plating, smoothing, or removing detailed features of metal items, or otherwise altering the color or appearance.

CSM Tom A - AR 670-1 is now a punitive regulation. Deviations and violations are punishable by UCMJ. Commanders are authorized to make deviations to regulations only when the regulation STATES that Commanders can make exceptions to it's contents. A Commander cannot authorize you to violate punitive regulations. Being a Commander does not grant you carte blanche to violate Army Doctrine.

CSM Tom A - I'm pretty confident the CSM asking the question isn't debating removing the pockets from his Army Service Uniform in combat ;o)
This is clearly a garrison discussion.

CSM Tom A - I promise you, the CSM starts pulling arbitrary uniform nonsense that violates uniform regulations just "because he's the CSM", he's on a very quick path towards an appearance on "US Army WTF moments", the spread of his shennanigans across the SMA's FB page, and a very fast subsequent Letter of Concern in his Permanent File. Understanding uniform regulations and what you can and cannot do is a 10 level task. You CANNOT just remove the pockets from your Dress Uniform "because I'm the CSM and I said so".

CSM,

With the recent release of ALARACT 027/2019, the IHWCU does not have chest pockets. However, nothing at the moment from an official source states that the chest pockets can be removed from the ACU.

In the interest of saving folks some digging, here a picture of the IHWCU from the Army Times.

This was something we used to do back in the early days of OIF before the Army had combat shirts. You could get away with a lot of uniform violations then because as Soldiers we were modifying Cold War gear to meet the needs of a new battlefield. Everything was constantly being modified. In garrison, that would never fly, and now that we have gear like combat shirts that meet with pockets on the sleeves there is no need to modify uniforms.
