You might want to upgrade car insurance to full coverage since 80% of el Paso are uninsured and they let Juarez cars on El Paso roads

When I was there a stop light meant stop sign... they stop then go... even right at the base entrances. Spanish is helpful. To get away just drive north an hour up to cloudcroft and you're in a mountain forest... or go hiking in town off trans mountain road to cottonwood springs. Lots to do and I loved it there... but I think I was the only one, everyone else complained. Good places to eat are Jaxon's and The Foul Place (if that's still there). The best Chinese is in Juarez but I bet no one is allowed to go there anymore.

Sgt A is correct Juarez is completely off limits. there are many good things about fort bliss. the drivers are not one of them. as mentioned in other comments make sure you have full coverage on all your vehicles. I live off post and I find it most convenient to live on the north east side of el paso due to less traffic. its about at max 25 min. to post, as far as crazy post regulations I've been here for little over 3 years and I haven't heard of any. the mileage limit is dependent on the battalion. I've seen it fluctuate from 250 on normal weekends to 500miles on a 4 day. if you own a motorcycle. its a good idea to take your time getting used to the drivers in elpaso they don't care for motorcyclist especially on post. if you go to 2-1 bde expect not to get deployed for at the minimum 2 years.

You will also want to avoid malls and walmarts on I-10 during Christmas season, unless you have a lot of patience. Don't know if it still holds true, while I was there about 5 years ago, El Paso had one of the highest drunk driver rates during late hours of the night. I believe it was around 1/4 after midnight to around 4 am. I can agree with SPC Gibbons, the NE side was a nice area to live regarding traffic and the necessities are in close vicinity, with access to Trans Mountain to get to the west side of El Paso easier.
Don't go to Mexico.... ;o)
On post housing is actually pretty nice, but if you don't qualify or don't want to wait, the east side is closer to 1AD areas and to the new hospital being built. West side is a tad nicer, but is farther to drive (20+ minutes). Avoid living in central El Paso.
Post facilities are great (PX is hands down best in DoD). Army spent A LOT of money upgrading the facilities to make it a nicer place to be.

Best Mexican food in the US. Northeast area is the best place to live.

Except if you feel you want Italian food, went into a so called Italian resteraunt ordered lasagna and got pasta with taco filling.

I would add that there are some great German Restaurants in El Paso, as well as a German Center on post, as the Germans go there to get their AA training... (At least they did 10 years ago when I was there...

The German club was still there when I left in 2013. It was the only place in the city that allowed smoking indoors.

Since this is the food threat of the topic; I will throw my 2 cents in this one as well. If you get a chance, and have a little money to burn, check out Cattlemens in Fabens. Its about 30 minutes east of El Paso, and usually rated in the top 20 steakhouses in the country.
