I retired in November from the US Navy. After taking 80 days terminal leave I decided time to look at the market. Well good news of IT related jobs. I put my resume out on three sites and within 2 days had 4 interviews lined up with contractors and government employers. With the right certifications and the right resume you can pretty much write your own ticket. I carry the basic certifications Sec+ NET+ so on so forth and carry about 15 years experience. So if your getting close and the nerves are starting to get to you. Have faith there are plenty of opportunities out there. Just keep your certs active!!!

PO1 Brian Turpen you are correct with the right certifications and resume you can find jobs but so is location, some areas are better for IT than others.Another tidbit is there are several jobs in IT since that is a broad market make sure you apply to the correct jobs. Good luck on the interviews.

I live in a very small town in southern Indiana. the employment area here were very limited but as luck would have it walked right in to the right places and got hired the day of my first interviews. I would suggest going the network analyst or network security routes as those skill sets seem to be in very high demand right now. Also most companies I interviewed with were willing to pick up the cost of the Continuing education and pay for follow on certifications.

Well timing is right too and yes those two fields are good ones to go into as well. Never stop learning is the right motto.

So true. Location, location, location! Also the size of the company is important starting out. Working for smaller companies with focused projects, also companies that have DoD or Federal focas is a good place to get your footing. I work for a major communications company now and I can say I don't think I would have thrived as well in such a large civilian/commercial environment starting out.

It is sooooo much better now than when I got out of the Navy in 2004. The terms Information Assurance and Cyber Security were not commonly used. I had 4 different resumes ranging from IT to Satcom because I had no clue where I fit. The certs were mainly A+, N+ and MCSE 2000. It seemed a total fluke that like I ended up in Information Security. I got the first job because I knew most of the Directives and Policies. So I was a policy writer for Information Security. However, as I learned to navigate the civilian/government world I found that almost all of my RM/IT training came in to be very useful. Certs are important but I have ran across many civilians that have a list of certs and can barely spell security or IT. The best people I have worked with and for have been prior service IT's.
