I'm currently in high school and I went to basic training last summer. I don't ship to AIT until 11July. I just want to know if it's possible for me to get switched from reserves to active and how would I go about doing that? I'm not a fan of the part time soldier thing. I just want to be in full time.

Well, you certainly won't be able to do anything until you graduate. That being said, have you contacted your Recruiter to see what can be done? They will, after all, have the better answers as they are the SME's.

SSG, I contacted them and they said they wouldn't know and i'd probably have to get my unit to sign papers releasing me. But I was also told that since I'm not out of high school yet I can still change it so i'm very .

PV2(P) (Join to see) - The recruiter would be talking about getting a 368 signed which being brand spanking new would be highly unlikely but can always try. I don't know what being in high school would have to do with you already signed, sworn in, and been to boot camp contract...

I had to wait a minimum of 2 years before I could make the switch from the Reserves to Active Duty. Remember though, you may ASK your unit to release you so you can go active, but they are not REQUIRED to. If your unit does not want to release you, you may have to wait out your contract and then go active.

Thanks SSG. I'm about a year into my contract, so when i reach 2yrs would it be a good time to ask? also I'm trying to go to a few schools. Would that be harder for me since i'm in the reserves?

PV2(P) (Join to see) - Whether or not you could go active will depend on the current business rules and if your reserve unit will release you. That said, none of the reserve units I have served with have ever held back a young soldier trying to doing great things on active duty.
Schools are a mixed bag. Personal performance and the command your unit falls under are bigger factors than whether you are active or reserve. Your reserve unit won't offer you any schools if you aren't MOS qualified. When the times comes that you do get sent to a school, that unit will expect you to bring back that knowledge to share, so don't count on going to training and then bouncing out.
