So I went to MEPS today and it went super well seeing as I'm qualified but I just had a question.
Everyone says you sign a medical release form of some sort but I don't remember reading anything like that? There was a privacy act one but that said on the form "this is not a form of release" or something like that. Is there not a release form? I thought HIPAA was waived when I enlist but it can't be if I never signed anything?

No, HIPPA is not waived in an overall fashion. IE, I had a prescription for Tylenol 3. My leadership did not know what prescription I was taking, just what the side effects were and how long I should be taking it. My kids' godmother was a combat medic and went ballistic on leaders who would even ASK the Soldier HIPAA protected questions. You do have to sign paperwork that allows MEPS to request your records for MEDICAL STAFF use and stuff like that. But your overall personal medical information is still protected from the general military population. Only certain limited details can be released to certain individuals. If you haven't signed one yet, they'll get it to you. I think I signed a new one every six months or so, and that was with me just being treated at TMCs, I never had an actual aid station. Both ex-husband's signed those forms even more often since their units had aid stations as well as the TMCs they went to.

Ok, so it's like if I listed medical information then those doctors and those records are essentially waived? But not other doctors that were not mentioned?

No, it's like you'll be required to sign releases for any and all medical records to have copies sent that MEPS deems necessary. Any and all medical information is still protected by HIPAA, regardless of being pre military or after enlistment and not to be disclosed to even military personnel outside of the limited information to select personnel necessary for mission readiness.
