The Air Force is going into the direction of review boards for E-7, like the current E-8/9 boards, instead of the written tests only.

I think it's a great idea, but I'd like to see what the plan is. I'm afraid it will cost too much money to conduct the vast amounts of promotion boards that will be required and after our recent bouts with force reduction, I'm not sure if spending money on promotion programs is the right thing to spend it on.
The E7 board would try to eliminate those MSgts that don't really want to be SNCOs, but want the raise. Hopefully, when the new EPR (ACA) comes out, those situations will be addressed via ratings, stratification, etc. There's still a lot to be seen in the near future.

I can't see more stringent criteria being a bad thing..

whew! I dont know if I will like it lol I know the Army does the board thing for all NCO and SNCO ranks, but it is in person correct?

I will say that the good thing is that it gives the observing leaders a better look at the person up for promotion

For E6 and below, it's in person. For E7 and up, it's a records review.
