What duty stations are the best, in your opinion, for engineering officers (career advancement/special schools/recreation/proximity to cities)? Is there any type of document or website I haven't found that contains information about which units are stationed where?

If you are CAC enabled you can go to FMS web and look for Combat Engineer units by MTOE and UIC. Years ago branch managers used to maintain lists of units by location that had their branch slots in them.
Easier: look at Divisional and Armored Cavalry posts like Bragg, Drum, Irwin, Hood, Korea, Bliss, Polk, Leonard Wood (Engineer Center and School), Campbell, Knox, Riley, Carson, JBLM, US Army EUROPE, hawaii, and Alaska.

It used to be that if you wanted to kick start a successful career, you needed an initial tour in Europe or Korea. (many, many years ago). They wanted to see how you’d perform in an uptempo environment.
With all the engagements on going, finding an up tempo unit won’t be hard. I’d contact the Engineer Advance course (Fort Leonard Wood), and ask them to for career advice.

I did a short KeepUP tour with the 82nd Engineers in Bamberg, Germany and I really liked the job, post and area. Unfortunately, that unit was deactivated when they reconfigured 1st ID, but my understanding is that the remnents are now assigned to the 173rd in Italy as the 54th Engineers. Europe and Airborne both, but I suspect this unit is out of Europe as much as it is in country since they are attached to the 173rd.

Funny you mentioned the 82nd EN BN. I was an umpire during winter REFORGER (1979 I believe), and my area of responsibly was the 82nd (not to be confused with the 82nd Airborne).

COL David Turk - I was involved with the Reforger just after Desert Storm when they changed the scenario and ran it North South against a fictional European version of Iraq. Had to make a quick change in mindset from defending the Fulda Gap. Still interesting exercise and I enjoyed my time at the unit and in Germany in general.
