Background: Fairchild AFB in Spokane allows visitors to now keep their firearms in the vehicle as long as they are UNLOADED, SEPARATED from the ammo, and Locked (so a small under the seat safe). If pulled over, must declare it immediately.

Back to the Question: I am going to be visiting the Seattle/Tacoma area in July. I have my CCL and would like to travel with it... what is the base policy of JBLM as it pertains to firearms? I know that the rules are base specific, so am checking to see what base specific rules JBLM has prior to going there!

That's a change. It use to have to be going to your residence or the armory. Period. Obviously things have changed.

Yes. Some of the changes have come up since more and more people are getting CCL, and with the attacks on "victim zones" such as recruiting stations.... SOME units in DoD are waking up and seeing life as it is.....The DoD has authorized (or had talked about authorizing) local authority to modify rules at the base/installation leadership.... I then retired and heard nothing until not long ago when I stopped at the AAFES Gun Counter and asked if there were any updates (at Fairchild). They even had something printed up with the new base policy! I think it is a step in the right direction...not fully there yet, but getting closer!

Maj Chris Nelson - Sign of the times. All installations need to have new policies to address CCW and their transportation.

MSgt David Hoffman - That is my thing.... I am now retired. I am willing to NOT carry on base....but MY personal travel between should not be compromised.... My understanding is (and just confirmed today at the BX gun counter), if you have a CCL, you may keep your weapon in your car, unloaded, in a locked space. CCL is NOT honored ON-BASE, but the carry on the base does not require a stop at an arms room....

If all else fails contact JAG office. If SGT Johnson is correct, and I assume he is the JAG office may be able to provide you with the proper paperwork prior to your arrival or they will be able to direct you to the proper authorities who can assist you in this matter;

First, the PM would set the policy, not a bunch of people on the internet. Second, if as you state you will be going on base for a function, just leave it in your hotel for the day. No brainer.
