I am trying to start my Warrant Officer Application for flight warrant and know I need a couple letters of recommendation. I'm currently in a signal unit with no real contact or affiliation with aviation. What's the best way for me to find some current flight warrants to build a rapport with?

Eons ago when I was still a SSG wanting to go to Flight School, I went to an aviation unit and spoke with the 1SG. 10 minutes later, I was drinking coffee with their commander, a Major. He called in a freshly minted WO-1 Flingwing pilot. The Major told him to help me all he could. It worked. Mr. Rose was awesome in support and knowledge, helping me make it to Flight School and beyond.

Where are you stationed? Most Likely there is a Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) around you. I would go down to the local CAB and ask around most likely some one will help you. However, it is important to have most if not all of your packet done before reaching out. In my experience and my own preference I dislike when Soldiers ask for help with a packet but they have not put in any leg work. It shows you care if you show up with a packet 80-90% complete looking for mentorship on your packet.

I'm at Camp Casey, Korea. There's a couple blackhawks on a pad by the medical buildings, but I haven't heard about any proper aviation units here. I also just got here, so I'm not exactly an authority.

Yeah I would ask around and either way the MEDVAC aviators could help you. They are usually sitting around on call waiting for something to happen.

SGT (Join to see) The Blackhawks on your med pad are part of 3-2 GSAB based at Camp Humphreys. Call the unit and explain your situation, ask if one of their pilots would give you an hour of their time and set up an appointment. Heck, offer to buy the pilot lunch.

Have you filled out your 4187 and taken the SIFT, yet? Those come before any letters of recommendation.

Not yet. I'm studying for the SIFT now, but I'm trying to get ahead of the letters.

Letters of recommendation should be the last step. I work in the CAB HQ, many senior warrants are amazed when soldiers of all ranks waste their time asking for a recommendation while not they haven’t even passed the test, physical or attempted to fill out the application. Letters of recommendation take some work away from their job and most will have no issue recommending a qualified go-getter. After you have completed everything but the senior leader and warrant officer LOR ask your leadership to help you review it. It is acceptable to have ask the senior warrant to give your packet another review (they usually will anyway, but be courteous and ask).

I took the SIFT at Ft Sill, OK and passed it without any prep in 1990. I almost took the plunge. I just needed the letters, but kuwait was invaded.... I got that Marine Corps twitch and reenlisted after the local MEPS SNCOIC told me about stop-loss and recall notices.
