Sir,

It has long been past time, but I don't see it happening anytime soon as the funding is a completely different entity and I don't think the powers that be would want to lose out on what they think is that main base of customers, the retirees and the junior enlisted.

I think it would drive the retirees into the arms of Walmart more than they already are, and it would push the juniors away more to the Internet purchases with free shipping that many are currently utilizing for things the PX doesn't carry.

It would not be conducive for the bottom line for AAFES/NEX/BX to go that route in my opinion.

Sergeant what does it mean to go purple? I googled purple commissaries and none of it seemed applicable.

SPC,

It is where all the entities fall under one umbrella, such as the commissaries all fall under DECA for all military bases, but the exchanges are separate for the services; NEX for the Navy base, BX for the Marine bases, and AAFES/PX/Exchange for the Army/AF bases. They are currently run by different independent companies, but I think with the individualism from each of the services and its members it would not be as feasible as each negotiates its own prices on many products and has items designed to focus on those particular services as well.

It is something that has been looked at in the past after each major conflict, but shot down each time by each entity involved. Don't see it happening anytime soon.

Hope that explains it a little better for you.

Yes, sergeant, I understand now.  It's an interesting concept.  Thanks for explaining.

SSGT Baker,

Your definition is accurate for the military services, but is not the same for the external civilian services that service the military, while similar in thought, the explanation for services provided to the military fall under the way I described, thanks for providing the military version although not applicable for the purpose here.
