I have read the Army has three grades of coffee – diesel fuel, battery acid and used crankcase oil. What is the best cup of Combat coffee you experienced? And where were you at?

The 0400-0800 watch generally get what was left over from the mid watch brew. This is the brew that was made around 2300 and is sat there until the next watch was able to use it. It was so thick it was almost like mud, but you didn't care because you only had a few minutes to complete your round and make it to your watch station in order to relieve the watch. It would normally be another 15 minutes after the relief before you could attempt to drink it. The first sip can wake up the dead. Your wired for at least 30 minutes, not because of the caffeine but because of the taste. Yet you manage to wolf down the cup of coffee only because your too damn tired to care.

I would drink this over Starbucks coffee.

Cheers!

Cannot count the number of times I have done the same thing, I use to find cold coffee and just turn it back on so it would warm up. One time I ran it back thru the pot thru the old grinds. LoL.

We used to take the instant coffee in the MRE, rip open the package and dump it in our mouth.  Then take a swig of water from your canteen=good to go for 12 more hours.  That'll put hair on your chest.

This is the only way to use the MRE instant coffee. Great for a quick kick

Field coffee was never the same for me after I walked into an MKT in Graf around 1984 and saw how they were making coffee. They took a large can of grounds, dumped it into a knee high stocking (clean I hope!), tied it off and dropped it into a huge pot of boiling water and let it continue to boil until they felt it was strong enough and then transferred the coffee into a silver bullet.
Having said all of that.. it really wasn't horrible coffee for the field!

MSG Wade Huffman I've done that, only it was using an Army issue green wool sock....after months of instant coffee a guy will do about anything if a can of real grounds shows up.

Combat coffee? Perhaps working with the Iraqi police... they made some good coffee. But when I was in Panama I remember the patrol supervisor bought me a coffee (I was pulling duty at the old cemetery). That stuff kept me awake for literally 24 hrs! He warned me it would, and it did!!!!
