Many Regs are 2 lbs of common sense packed tightly into a 50 lb bag. I don't think there is whole lot to be gained from reading a reg from front to back unless a specific question comes up. What I'd like to see is Marines reading appropriate level SOP's, FMFM's, FM's and TM's for their level and one level up.

SGT (Join to see) - I appreciate your explanation. Civilian organization leadership varies from different to non-existent. I'm just going to say I disagee about leadership and leave it there. On your training is universal comment above, I do not think Training is universal, it I say for that reason why it doesn't lend it self to a lone doctrine, technical, or regulatory publication which was the original question of the thread posted by SGT Joseph Gunderson. Training is not only critical it is inherently complex because of the width and breadth of all MOSs, at all levels, collective and individual, unit and institutional. No one pub will do it. I'll concede that your advocacy for Training, especially by NCOs is spot on. I am content to disagree about the grist of the rest.

LTC Jason Mackay - I like your reasoning. I can't say that it would be my first choice to have people read but I can understand that it would definitely make a difference . I can imagine that things may run a bit smother from the top down and back if young/new soldiers understood what was going on a little more.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - just in recent memory:
- what regulation covers quarters? Why do I have to stay in my room if I feel better?
- can my chain of command call me outside of duty hours?
- who is allowed to deny a unit transfer for a soldier?

All boiled down to 600-20 and the responsibility and authority of command that was foreign to these individuals.

LTC Jason Mackay - Again, I think you missed my point. I wrote that training was not a universally inherent trait that emerges in any group. You seem to agree with that idea.
I was going write a long response, but instead of letting you go for the hat trick, I’ll keep it short.
Too many leaders in the Army fail to understand basic, underlying human nature tenets of command and leadership. No amount of schooling or regulations will change it. You can either hit a curveball or you can’t. The ones who don’t get it are the same ones who wouldn’t climb the rusty jungle gym on the playground as a child. But anyone..anyone...can learn how to train.

The Army has a lot of problems, including command. With exceptions, it’s not run by the best, brightest most effective leaders. So to wrap up and tie back to my original response, if there was one regulation (imagine my internal chagrine when I responded with an FM), it would be 7-0.

Although it’s not a specific FM or reg, every soldier and service member at that should be able to perform the tasks in the skill level 1 book.
