Need my knee pretty much rebuilt. Does being out 12 months automatically put me in for a medical seperation?

Well long story short, I tore my acl, pcl, meniscus and mcl a month back. They say the odds of tearing that many ligaments in one shot is very rare. But anyways, the doctor recommended I get medically separated, but my chain of command thought other wise and so did I. But I got my recovery plan and I haven’t even had the surgery yet and it’s looking like a 12 month recovery if all goes well. And I haven’t even had surgery so 13 months. Does being out of the game this long automatically put me in for a medical seperation? I just need to know before I put in all this work and get kicked out anyway?

Honestly, as of right now, your focus needs to be surgery. Don't worry about recovery plan, medical boards, or anything else yet. Get your surgery scheduled ASAP, use your Convalescent Leave the way it is intended and heal. Listen to your surgeon's instructions. Once you've healed enough, take your physical therapy seriously, but DO NOT push too fast or you WILL end your career. Take care of your knee first, then handle the rest as it comes. It's going to be rough, but you can handle it, Marine.

Handle your medical first. If your command is willing to go to bat for you there is a good chance you'll keep a spot in formation.

I had the same surgery on both knees, at different times in my career. You can shorten the recovery time with dedication, mine was 8 months and 6 months. But you can fight being seperated. My Dr's asked me, I said no. Did 20. However, sometimes, depending on the surgery your knees will never be the same.
