Honest truth, no! It's very focus on MOS training and maintaining what the DSs ingrained in those soldiers.

At least from my foxhole that's how it looks. Me as the PSG I do take my time on the soldierization process, but that takes my family times. Is a give or take.

Family and work is definitely a delicate balance. With all of the proposed changes to Army IET, it’s interesting to see everyone’s opinions.

It is a hard thing to balance, but you have to dedicate to those troops because at some point they will end up being my soldiers.

When I was a Drill Sergeant I was part of a 10 Week pilot program for Basic training. That extra week allowed us to cover more training on the necessary skills IET Soldiers would need for combat operations. This was during the surge of Afghanistan. In short yes and no would be my answer but I understand cost and time constraints.

1SG (Join to see) What specific skills were concentrated on? Do you believe those Soldiers that completed the extra week were ahead of their peers upon arriving at their unit or perhaps ahead of their peers when BOG in an overseas environment?

MAJ (Join to see) - Radio training, First Aid, and weapons skills were concentrated on more. Prior to the pilot program, analysis was done based off previous classes end of course critique forms which highlighted these areas from IET Soldiers when asked what they felt they did not receive enough training on. Since I am a signal Soldier, I signed for additional radios and had them setup on every floor of the barracks for the fire guards and 1 at the CQ desk. Instead of going down the stairs and reporting head count to the Drill Sergeant on duty, they called in their report over the radio. This along with other radio training I would say put them ahead of their peers. We also spent extra time with Advanced rifle marksmanship and shoot/don't shoot scenarios. Overall, I think it went well.

1SG (Join to see) - got it. My basic was longer in 2010 at Ft. Benning, but I don't remember if we were a part of a special program.

Are we talking about Basic/Boot or AIT and its equivalents? Basic soldiering should be all that Basic/Boot is. I mean, that's the point of that two months, isn't it? In AIT all they should be worried about is learning their job. For certain careers that's just pretty much an extension of Basic where those basic skills are fine tuned and expanded upon. Basic soldiering has nothing to do with fixing helicopters or tanks.

Basic / boot was the focus, but I feel that the AIT environment should continue to teach those things that were introduced during basic / boot

CPT (Join to see) - Refresher or reinforcing training on basic skills would help, but it might require lengthening AIT time. While discipline is important, there is also a need to send a new recruit to a unit as soon as possible for manning.
