Is it necessary to disagree with alternate points of views or observations and experiences without actually understanding your disagreement?

SFC Anonymous on RP believes that my experiences shared on RP are BS, yet he is clueless about my point of view on the subject. I ask him to read my books to comprehend my views, but he refuses to read my books, because he feels my work is BS. Is such pointless disagreement necessary on RP? The disagreement was on PTSD and it's treatment.

I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. I think this is where the term “troll” comes from? If a person responds anonymously to a point of view in a discussion on social media and doesn’t identify themselves I have a hard time talking that person seriously. Especially on Rally Point where-in my experience-it seems that most discussions are respectful. I would respect the fact that you wrote a book. That is enough-even if I disagree with you-to give due deference to your opinion. If I’m not going to write a book I would think I would at least read one before adamantly disagreeing with it.

Interesting point; so, I was being trolled on RP by an anonymous SFC is what you are saying James.
Read or don't read; if feedback is to be provided then, reading the books is elementary. Otherwise, no need to react to the point of hurting another or to give a perception of jealousy; agreed.

Yes, troll is definitely what this sounds like. I have trolled a few times, just for laughs, mainly on the Whisper app because everything on there is anonymous and some of the things people post are just too stupid to resist, like when a vegan decided to accuse meat-eaters of being barbaric for “eating something that was once alive” ignoring that plants are also alive. However, I have never done it on here and prefer to actually present a reasonable discussion if I disagree with someone’s viewpoint. Same for Facebook. It’s only that one app I can’t resist.

Hi Gene-yes that’s what I think was going on. The most unsettling point of your question is that it was a disagreement about treating PTSD. We need all the conversation we can get about treating this condition. I haven’t read your work but it sounds like you’re dedicated to the subject. I treat PTSD using a variety of approaches and I’ll take any collaboration I can get. I just hope that those reading your posts don’t become discouraged by the troll. If he repeatedly interferes with your discussions and keeps you from being able to carry on a well informed, respectful and professional dialogue about your topic-especially about PTSD-then I’d consider contacting one of the admins and have them check him out. Best of luck to you!

Don't sweat it. Another "Anonymous" didn't like one of my responses and pontificated all sorts of commentary on what I supposedly said. Problem is none of his words came close to matching mine, save one taken out of context. So if you take a look at the trend, it appears some users read whatever meaning into a post they want and then fire back. Inaccurate reading nets inaccurate understanding, hence inaccurate response. Others decide early that somehow you don't "qualify", hence aren't worth the read. Don't take it personally. RP membership, like anything else, is on a Bell Curve. You'll get some things you consider rather off the wall. However, sometimes you get stuff from the fringe that makes you rethink. I'd rather the fringe be there and I'll filter accordingly. Social media can provide both reward and frustration in unbalanced quantities.

I don't think you should have an opinion without understanding at least your own point of view. This is a huge problem with this nation today; people love to latch on to a side withoit even understanding what they are supporting. It is ridiculous.

In addition, a basic knowledge of the "opposing" viewpoint is necessary to engage in debate. I use the quotations because many people will argue with someone and they are just too stupid to realize they both believe the same thing.

The problem is, they only have one point of view and once you begin to debate them, they just want to degrade your opinion and spout the same garbage over and over. You cannot debate someone who's thought train cannot expand to look at other opinions.
