Greetings;
I'm looking into entering Active Service after 12 years in the National Guard. I am a team leader in a light Cavalry Mountaineering Troop, and I am interested in starting at 3-61 CAV. I'm curious as to how life is there, ie, family life, training optempo, etc.
Thank you.

I transitioned from USAR to RA in 2000. Best thing to do it talk to a recruiter. There are so many variables that will determine this - In/Out calls for the MOS, Overall MOS strength, etc. You may have to give up a rank - I was a SGT and came back on AD as a SPC with no TIG, almost a start over but wasn't too bad. As far as the unit, they will have to have a valid REQ published with HRC matching the MOS/Grade, and "Station of Choice" would be the enlistment option, so if there is another unit that has a REQ open, you may get the Duty Station, but not the specific unit....
Good Luck.
Good Luck.

One other thing, also start talking to your NG command about getting a "Conditional Release" This will be required before the recruiter can schedule an appointment at MEPS to talk to a Career Counselor. It basically states that they will release you of your obligation only on the condition of an enlistment in the Regular Army. If you fail to enlist or do not qualify to enlist the conditions of the release are not satisfied and your original obligation goes back into effect.
