Obama's 'clandestine' plan to make bullets vanish

Former U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., is joining the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups to warn about a back-door attack on the Second Amendment by the Obama administration’s Environmental Protection Agency.
Ex-Rep. Allen B. West, R-Fla.
In a column posted on his website Sunday, West wrote about the Doe Run company’s lead-producing plant in Herculaneum, Mo., which is being forced to close after the EPA required it to spend up to $100 million on upgrades.
Doe Run, the last primary lead smelter in the United States, has been around since 1892 but is closing on Dec. 31.
West accused Obama of using the EPA to advance “backdoor gun control … while we are all distracted with Obamacare and Iran nuclear negotiations.”
West argued the Obama administration’s “new extremely tight air-quality restrictions” have led to the end of lead as the primary metal in bullets — making ammunition much more expensive and less accessible and leaving America no choice but to turn to overseas operations to produce lead bullets, a situation West says is akin to a federal power grab on guns.
“Come 2014, all ammunition sold to civilian gun owners in America will have to be imported, a result of President Obama’s crackdown on sulfur dioxide and lead emissions and accompanying harsh Environmental Protection Agency regulations,” wrote West.

“[This] will surely increase the price and possibly come under government control,” Mr. West warned, according to a Breitbart.com report. “It seems this is fully in concert with the U.S. military and Homeland Defense recent purchase of large quantities of ammunition.”
He said the “chilling effect” is that while the closure of the smelt plant doesn’t take guns out of the hands of Americans, it does put in jeopardy ammunition supplies.
As the largest lead producer in North America, Doe Run was embroiled in a decade-long battle between angry parents, government regulators and environmentalists, who argued the plant was responsible for high levels of lead in the blood of children in the area, according to an August story on Mid-Missouri Public Radio.
The battles over contamination in the town pitted neighbor against neighbor and culminated in a flurry of lawsuits. One of them singled out the EPA and forced the federal government to revise the national air pollution standard for lead, tightening it by a factor of ten.
The NRA-ILA issued a press release in response to Doe Run’s closing:
Doe Run made significant efforts to reduce lead emissions from the smelter, but in 2008 the federal Environmental Protection Agency issued new National Ambient Air Quality Standards for lead that were 10 times tighter than the previous standard. Given the new lead air quality standard, Doe Run made the decision to close the Herculaneum smelter.
Whatever the EPA’s motivation when creating the new lead air quality standard, increasingly restrictive regulation of lead is likely to affect the production and cost of traditional ammunition. Just this month, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that will ban lead ammunition for all hunting in California. The Center for Biological Diversity has tried multiple times to get similar regulations at the federal level by trying, and repeatedly failing, to get the EPA to regulate conventional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
“You can own all the guns you want, but if you can’t get ammo, you are out of luck,” West wrote, on his blog. “Remember when President Obama promised his minions that he was working on gun control behind the scenes? Welcome to it. The result is that all domestically mined ore will have to be shipped overseas, refined and then shipped back to the U.S.”
West warned: “Not only will ammo be even harder to come by, the demand and the process of supply will cause the price to skyrocket even more. And ponder this: There is an excellent chance that Obama will rig the market to where all ammo has to be purchased from the government, instituting an ammo registration. … So America, backdoor gun control is moving forward … [and] our Second Amendment rights are undergoing an assault by clandestine infiltration.”
West concluded his editorial by bashing the president’s “progressive socialist acolytes” for destroying the Second Amendment before telling fellow GOP politicians, “Now it’s our move in 2014.”

Sgt Glenn,
Children in that community had lead in their bodies at over 100 times the national average. The water and air quality was tested and proved to be lead toxic.
Solution, move the plant to a new ultra modern facility that does not release lead into the environment. Cost, 1/3 that of modifying the present plant.
If the NRA, that nut West and those who believe the government is coming for your guns are so concerned then pool your money and build a new factory that meets the EPA standards in the Arizona desert, mountains of West Virginia or anywhere else away from children who need clean water to live.
This is right wing, pro-gun paranoid nonsense. West is playing people for fools to get the vote, and if you read the EPA findings and the minutes from local community meetings this was all about lead in children.
Keep buying bullets, stack em in your bunker and wait for the gun police to raid your compound, or read the facts, move the factory and increase production to lower prices.
I'm with Sgt Vincent, I use copper and buy in bulk.

I am a firm believer that you may believe what you want to SFC Parker, having said that I am also a firm believer that this modern government we have to tolerate because there are not enough people willing to stand up to their BS, practices lies and deceit on a daily basis, twists things to their advantage to Justify doing what they do. I know we will never have a completely honest government system because too many people adhere to their way of thinking which is sad to be honest. Again I respect your views and will not give any down votes to you and appreciate your being civil unlike others on this forum.

Sgt Glenn,
I disagree with you, but I respect your feelings towards the present state of our government. I'm here in DC now. Its worse than you realize.
I said this in another post but get involved in politics, join a party or go independent, study the issues and advocate for change.
Your a gun rights guy and that's fine, but please try looking at the victims of gun violence point of view. They see Sandy Hook and a military assault weapon and feel powerless, they are scared and hurt. Giving them a gun is not going to help them, so you support local back ground checks without records keeping. Gun rights maintained, anti gun advocates pleased.
As for the dishonesty, well take away the uncontrolled flow of money and add term limits and we may be able to get rid of the bad apples.
We need your voice so please don't stop advocating your cause. Just do some impartial research.

I have been around the block many times at my age now and not once SFC Parker have I seen a weapon of any kind hurt another human being...EVER !!! you can set an AR15 down (or any bullet firing weapon), scream at it, cuss at it, throw rocks at it, bash it with a baseball bat and it will not harm you in ANY WAY!!! trust me !!!! I also have never seen a company that kills or poisons other life forms to include people. What I have seen are people who pull those triggers for what ever reason, and people who are greedy and take short cuts on manufacturing process's and disposal procedures of contaminate products, or again greedy people taking shortcuts on building materials or designs... but have never once in my life seen a inanimate object actally be in the physical capacity to harm anyone or thing. So I dont care who states what or claims what, until I actually see a rifle or a hand gun or any other form of projectile firing weapon actually load, arm and fire itsself with no help what so ever from a person, or a building belonging to a company make the morally wrong decision to dump contaminates into either the ground, water system or air I will not bow to the notion that guns kill and people are poisoned by a company. I am not a die hard Gun go happy individual but am fed up with prevention mongrels who falsely lay blame wher blame is not due . I posted several threads that I just randomly found online for the sake of posting them, do I claim to stand behind them, no I have not, have I had people like you make assumptions towards my character because of what I have posted, yes I do. I am anti muslim terrorist, anti illegal alien, anti corrupt government, and anti anything else that threatens to destroy or change a way of life that has been around for over 200 hundred years and was intended to give an oppressed people a better life. 200 years is nothing when you look at other cultures and yes its very American to be the youngest nation on the planet and yet invade other countries who have been around for thousands of years, we have enough problems in this country so why do we not concentrate our efforts to clean our own yard 1st??? That is my standpoint on things...

One question. If the Smelting Plant has existed in the same place since 1892 , why would you knowingly live near it if you had issue with it? I know where this will go because I have seen it many times with racetracks, the track has been there for 50 yrs but then people build new homes around it and after time complain of the noise on the one or two nights a week that it operates and has it shut down. I'm starting to believe people are tyrants by nature. I'm losing faith in humanity.

SGT Glenn, I agree with what you said about Obama's "backdoor Gun control". Thanks to the NRA and other gun rights groups Obama and his stooge, Harry Reid were not able to ban weapons so they hatched the scheme to destroy the manufacturers of ammunition.

They are using the judicial process and incrementalism to slowly rid guns.

SFC Parker...SFC Parker ...SFC Parker...you really expect anyone to believe that BS story???? if this were the case the Military as a whole is in dire need of help!!!! You expect ANY one to believe that the Military cannot project its need for ammo after almost 22 years of invading all these different places???? I am Santa Clause too and you can expect coal and switches for this fabricated response!!!!! Bad Boy !!!!!!

I understand most of the ammo went to the SSA, NOAA, DHS, and other government agencies. 174 thousand rounds of hollow point ammo to the SSA, 46,000 rounds of hollow point ammo to NOAA, and 750 million rounds of hollow point ammo to DHS with an additional 750 million rounds of misc. ammo. Since hollow points are banned in war zone. what could the hollow points be for? Americans? this according to Retired Major General Jerry Curry.

SSgt James Stanley - you do know that government agencies also train correct. There is no nefarious event at work here. The ammo purchases are for training. Enough with the conspiracies.
