What's the strangest relationship you've ever had during your military career?

Since "relationship" is defined as being connected to others and not necessarily ongoing...I will share yet another sea-story that actually taught this young 18 year old snipe something about people. Back in 81, my ship docked in Singapore...the Lion City. At night...the entire city came to life with thousands of people cruising the strip...there were sailors from other US ships and sailors from other countries as well. It was crowded with people and vendors and mischief at every corner...very much like Bourbon street during "Mardi Gras" in NOLA. If you knew "Bugi" street back then - then you know what I mean! Anyway...I was trashed one night and involved in a several fights...and decided it was time to peel off from the rest of my shipmates. As I wandered off into the darker recesses of the city...I headed down a back alley and ran into a group of five older, local gentlemen; they were just sitting around a table drinking, eating, smoking and having conversation; they motioned to me to come sit down and join them...so I did. They gave me a beer and fed me some of the best prawns and other seafood I have ever eaten in my young life. As I ate and drank with them...we traded gestures and made conversation the only way two different nationalities could...and you know what? We understood each other perfectly! I wont go into details on what was said as I don't recall much of it anyway due to my drunken stupor, but I came away from it with this: "people are people wherever you go in life" - it's as simple as that...and I have learned and lived a better life from that one experience. It taught me to respect all people and all cultures...I wasn't a bad kid back then...just an ignorant one. This is one of my favorite "relationships" (and sea-story).

Once upon a time fell in love with a wonderful woman who was ....who was...allergic to saliva. Not her own. Mine. She'd swell up and break out in welts. Needless to say, it was a bit frustrating for us both. Wonder what happened to her.
