Depends on the situation.
If all you have is the Montgomery GI Bill, then your GI Bill benefits run as long as your contract says. Generally, that is ten years from the initial contract with a GI Bill amendment.
If you are eligible for REAP or Improved Post 9/11 GI Bill, then you have until 10 years from when you were last discharged from active duty.
It has been this way for as long as I have been in the Army, amended once the Post 9/11 GI Bill came into existence.

That is, and has always, been the case. That being said, if a Soldier has mobilized, they can use the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
