What is your opinion of new WO1s when they arrive to their organizations, are they prepared?

Throughout WOCS and WOBC new Warrant Officers are prepared to take on the role as the technical and tactical experts in their respective fields. Do you feel that new Warrant Officers are prepared when they arrive to their units? The institution of the block check, and more recently the new OER, WO1s have almost no time to "get their feet under themselves" and are expected to hit the ground running at their first organization. Are they ready?

WO1 Moyer,

For the most part, WO1s are prepared. I believe what most lack (I included when I was a WO1) is understanding Officership. Officership is very important; something that can't be taught overnight or in a school house. You will learn as you develop into your new role as a Warrant Officer. WO1s are expected to hit the ground running and hit the ground running with the "RIGHT" information. The expectation is set very high, and Warrant Officers are respected very well for their leadership and technical abilities. A WO1 must remember to seek out the CW3s-CW5s for their mentorship and experience as well--it will pay dividend, in the short and long term. Also keep in mind, a WO1 is no longer an NCO, please allow the NCOs to do their job as expected; establish great relationships with your Senior NCOs and especially the CSM; take care of the organization to the MAX and if a WO1 does that, he or she will definitely succeed in their first assignment while simultaneously hitting the ground running.
Good question Mr Moyer. Based on what I have seen with new WO1s, they have all been eager and do hit the ground running. They are motivated and ready to be that technical expert to the CDR. What I have also seen is senior W2s, W3s and W4s in the unit pull those WO1s under their wing and continue to teach and mold them. I believe that is critical. While I am sure that all the "high points" were hit during WOBC, I believe it is essential for the mentorship piece to take effect when those WO1s hit the ground running. It provides that direction. The old saying goes, you don't know what you don't know. And you sure as hell don't need to have your WOs "not knowing..." ;)

The preparation to be experts in their field should have happened while they were NCO's, long before selection. No school is going to magically make that happen. If they were not already experts in their field, frankly I don't know why they are/were selected...
