Take a second and think about what it is you are really wanting as your final outcome? Any martial arts school can teach self defense and discipline but there are ton that are trash..Cobra Kai and worse. My best advice, is go and watch classes in your area. Trust your gut. Some instructors are great with kids, others not so much. Also, make sure you consider what the middle schooler is looking for? If they do not buy in, then you are fighting an uphill battle from the beginning.

Excellent. I am going to assume we are talking about Brazilian jiu-jitsu and ground work is a very good thing to know...without details about your student, I am not really able to offer a whole lot of advice. I know that at some point you may want to think of adding some training with more striking. In my mind, going to the ground is a last resort, not where you want to be trying to go from the start...but that is real World and my opinion.

MSG Brad Sand-As you said trying to find an instructor that's good with kids is key, but it's up to him how much he wants to participate. We are looking still for a good one that he likes. Some are well not a match let's say. He did ask about more striking versus all the grappling.

He's hard to read and keeps his cards close. I'm not into up hill cycling, rather have hills. A little challenge then coast then ready for that challenge again. He has taken his Padi open water but decided not to do the final certification. He was super young and his older brother and sister were being instructed as well. He loves football so that is still highest priority for him but he has at least explored a world out side his comfort. Just want him to find his own passion not one that belongs to siblings. Being the youngest he really wants to get out of shadows! Super smart though and articulate, spent most of middle school defending others against bullies! He will find his way just wanted to explore options with him as long as he was asking!

As a PADI Dive Master and Master Diver, I would tell him he has already done the hardest part in SCUBA that he is going to have to do...there is harder training but he will have to sign up to do those things, and it might be worth the little effort that he has left to reap that rewards of what he has already gone through, but not trying to push him if he doesn't want to and I don't know what kind of diving you have in your area?
To the original question, I do not disagree with SGT Parrish and his endorsement of Krav Maga IF you are looking to provide your son self defense training. Krav is, in my opinion, is the best form for the average person to learn to defend themselves on the street but will lack in the discipline that other forms are more likely to stress...but still all goes back to instructors...and I am not an expert in any forms. Have had some experience with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Krav, a bit of Kenpo and in my younger years, Taekwondo. As I think on it now, IF your main concern in discipline Krav Maga might not actually be the wisest choice but I am still pretty much shooting in the dark?

Capt Sabrena Goldman - I just got tired of asking who's going, what they're doing and when they're coming back lol.
I also make them fill out all paperwork before I'll sign it, they aren't allowed to complain without offering a solution, and they have to plan their own trips and brief them to me for approval.

Haha I so do that too... glad I'm not the only one. Last night I added my dad's question on them, what's name of driver, make model and LP # of vehicle and state. or they don't get in vehicle. what's the best bully advice you've ever received? Or Given?

Capt Sabrena Goldman - I don't actually have any good bully advice at all. I was bullied as a kid and I fought constantly. My mom always said, "Don't start the fight, but always finish it."

SFC Jason Boyd - That is good! I try to teach situational awareness for prevention. My 15 yr old likes to tell bullies to stop bullying others. Even when he stands up to one I teach him to be aware of his posture and his tone. He has successfully given that message twice last year with out a mark that I know about.

I was reading through some of the responses from others and yourself on here and noticed you were a single parent. Might I suggest also taking Brazilian Jui-Jitsu as well so that your child can see if moms doing it then they can do it also. I also noticed you had mentioned that your child would like to get into more striking so I would suggest finding a MMA gym that offers just about everything I.E. BJJ, Muy Thai Kickboxing, and Boxing. That way your child becomes well rounded. Hopefully this helps a little.

I have gone with him to take the self defense classes on base. Funny you should mention Muy Thai since that was a few suggestions from my friends here. Still trying to find an instructor who is good with kids in Spring Lake. The best one we found with kids is in Southern Pines. Do you know of any instructors who are in Spring Lake? My schedule alternates so I may only be able to go every other week but I would like to start. I'm no MMA fighter but I work in Max Sec setting so it couldn't hurt to have some self defense training. There is training on Mon nights we were attending that was just mostly Jujitsu and that was his introduction. He does not watch Boxing but maybe this upcoming fight in August will spark a renewed interest. I used to watch wrestling with my dad growing up. It was kind of cheesy but MMA iseems more professional than that. Still it was a good bonding time with my dad that I'd never trade. Thanks for the reminder!

@Capt Sabrena Goldman I went to high school back in the early 90s and the only way I knew how to deal with bullies is to stand up to them. I know nowadays parents don't wanna hear that but that's how dealt with it and the bullying stopped
