I was at Ft Sill OK getting ready to go into AIT phase for 13B, light towed Artillery (M102). I was 18 at the time just months out of High School. The Drills were mad cause they knew if war came, they were stuck. We trainees wondered if we'd go if war came. If get letters from kids I went to school with asking if I was going, I replied I didnt know but we all soon got our answer. I was saying to myself at the time, I want this to happen, to participate and show home what this awkward quiet kid could do while they partied and went to college. <br />The 82nd Got to Saudi before anyone else moved, speed bumps (Aug 7th I believe).<br />I graduated OSUT Sept 90, Airborne Oct 90, Got to the 82nd ABN Oct 90. Arrived at my Battery (C 1/319 AFAR, 82ND ABD) Nov 26 90, Ft Champion Main, Saudi Arabia, for Desert Sheild and Participated in the Main Show in February. Got back to Bragg April 2 1991. My unit was scheduled to begin DRF-1 on the following Monday. My cousin that was in the Air Force was visiting. I called the Bn Staff Duty NCO to check in, my cousin called his base and was told to get back as quickly as possible. Helped my cousin pack up his car and got him on the road. The Monday following the battalion signed in from Block Leave and had the normal DRF-1 preparatory activities with one major difference, we had radios and TV's tuned to the news. That evening we were released to go home, that night at midnight we were alerted, a couple of days later we were on the ground in Saudi Arabia and became the "Line in the Sand". Campbell. I was watching the evening news with my Dad when some retired general started wargaming the future battle. My Mom got upset when the general said that the 101st Airborne would be used as a "trip wire" to slow down the "massive" Iraqi armor forces pushing south. I got a good chuckle out of that until I got a call from the Bn staff duty officer telling me that "all leaves were cancelled and all Soldiers were to return to base for further orders. A few weeks later, we landed in Dhaharan, Saudi Arabia.
