One of my neighbors is a retired COL from the USPHS. She was a doctor working at the CDC. She said that her Officer training, if I remember correctly, consisted of Customs and Courtesies, a little bit of D&C, and something else. She carries the blue retiree ID card.

She could not have been a COL in the USPHS. They hold sea rank. So it is likely she was a CAPT. Their version of basic training is classroom work for a week on customs and courtesies. They are trying to be a little more professional. Good luck with that!

The USPHS were the ones that quarantined ships at ports entering the country. They used to run hospitals back in the day. Now they are part of HHS. They provide medical support for Bureau of Prisons, Coast Guard, some support to DOD - mental health. They are also do the Indian Health Service.
