What does someone need to do in order to refile/amend their previous taxes because of an error? I just found out that due to my military status, I am exempt from state taxes. This would mean that I did not receive the full return on my 2013-2015 state tax returns. I was able to get the full return for my 2016 returns and log into MyPay and place myself in an "exempt" status.

**Update, it looks like I'd need to submit a 1040X. Again, does anyone have any experience amending their tax returns?**

Form 1040X is fairly straightforward with respect to your federal returns. Recommend you complete it for 2013, 2014 and 2015 ASAP. Wait till the due date to file your 2016 Form 1040 or you will lose out on the potential 2013 refund. Amending state income tax returns is usually similar. Be aware that the states will report any refunds to the IRS which will increase your federal taxes if you itemized in those years.

File an amended tax form. Each state will have different forms. It may be worth your time and money to visit a tax professional and seek their expertise?

Never have...tax situation started getting complicated a few years back with my business so I had to hire an accountant. I actually miss doing them myself though!
