There is ongoing questioning in regards to Bronze Star Devices. I know you cannot wear the bronze star on the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Ribbon. I am wondering about the ICM stars that are shown for those dates. Can you wear the BS on the ICM if you were awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Ribbon during the dates?

Let me get your question straight. You are asking if I earned the GWOTEM during period A, and I earned the ICM during period B, can I wear the campaign stars from period A? The answer is no. I had to get this clarified with my J1 many years ago, and the link below answers that question.

Block 2E states: Soldiers that elect to receive the GWOTEM in lieu of the ACM or ICM are not authorized service stars for those campaigns in which the GWOTEM is awarded.

Q14 also states: Bottom line, Soldiers do not receive campaign stars for the ICM/ACM for any period for which they were awarded the GWOTEM.

Just for clarification and to ensure our junior Soldiers are educated...the device that's worn on the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal is the Battle Star (bronze or silver). (AR 600-8-22, para 2-18f)

Depending on the award and the manner in which they are used, they may also be referred to as campaign stars or bronze/silver service stars.

Bronze and silver 3/16 inch stars are sometimes confused with individual decorations such as the Silver Star medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

The Silver Star and Bronze Star Medal are separate, distinct awards.
